Free trial emails: redesign brief

Redesign brief for the designer and Gavin · 25 September 2026

From Vinson · 25 September 2026 · for the designer and Gavin

The free trial flow gets rebuilt as three short emails, one button each, in the V2 design. It replaces IB // Stripe Free Trial Activated -- (SDXETb) and the five-email plan in the handover.

Design file: Figma, Emails page. V1 is the red column, V2 the green. Build in V2.

The short version

Source: Stripe subscriptions matched to app sessions, 25 Sep. A "run" is a session the user starts in the app.

How to read it. Since the trial left the default checkout on 5 August, trials come only from the "Try for free" widget and /try4free, so there are fewer of them and they convert at about half the old rate. The recent numbers are too small to prove much on their own. The larger earlier sample shows an association between more runs and higher conversion. It does not prove that another run causes payment.

The current emails, last 90 days:

3 · "IMPORTANT! Your Free Trial ends soon"Draft now2,35735%2.8%

What's wrong with them now

  1. Email 1 is a long scroll of images. 17 images, 11 of them linking to the same 2.5-minute YouTube video. The headline and button are pictures, so with images off the email is blank.
  2. It asks people to watch a tutorial. Austin's call on 25 Sep: the app is easy enough that the email should send them straight to the download.
  3. The body says "If you want to cancel your subscription, click here" in the welcome email. That line belongs in the footer.
  4. The main button in emails 2 and 3 is Discord. Email 2 got one click from 2,383 sends.
  5. It opens "it's APEX aka Austin from COMPREADY". New users know Hypertune, not CompReady.
  6. The V2 trial-ending design shows Shroud, Tarik and TenZ with follower counts. Our rules say no pro player names in email, and the follower counts have no date or source. Take the strip out.

The new sequence

Smart Sending stays off for email 1 because the account-created email goes out minutes earlier and Smart Sending would skip the trial welcome. Keep it off for email 3 while the notice is built. Once Klaviyo approves the message as transactional, Smart Sending does not apply to it.

Email 1 · Your first Boost

Subject: Two minutes to your first Boost

Alternative to test: Your trial is live. Here's step one

Preview text: Install, scan, Boost. That's it.

Headline: Two minutes to your first Boost

Body:

Hi there,

>

Your 7-day trial has started. Start with one thing today: run your first Boost.

>

1. Download and install Hypertune.

2. Let it scan your PC.

3. Press Boost, then launch your game.

>

Hypertune creates an automatic restore point, and you can revert its changes in one click.

>

Austin

Button: Download Hypertune

Link: the direct installer link from Kamil; if there isn't one that works from an email, the page where signed-in users download the app. Not the tutorial. Add the tags from the rules.

Image: none needed. If the design team adds one, it's the Boost screen, linked to the same place.

Email 2 · The second session

Sends: day 2. Once Kamil sends optimizer runs to Klaviyo and confirms a usable app link, split it: people who haven't run Hypertune yet get version A, everyone else gets version B. Until then, use the neutral fallback. Do not tell everyone they have not run it.

Fallback · run status unknown

Subject: Try Hypertune before your trial ends

Preview text: There is still time for a Boost.

Headline: Try Hypertune before your trial ends

Body:

Hi there,

>

Your trial ends on {{ trial end date }}. Open Hypertune and press Boost before then. If it is not installed yet, the button takes you to the download.

>

Austin

Button: Open Hypertune

Link: the app link if Kamil confirms one. Otherwise change the button to Download Hypertune and use the same download destination as email 1.

Version A · not run yet

Subject: Did your first Boost go through?

Preview text: If not, it takes two minutes.

Headline: Try it before your trial ends

Body:

Hi there,

>

You haven't run Hypertune yet. Install it, let it scan and press Boost. Your trial ends on {{ trial end date }}, so there is still time to see what it does on your PC.

>

Austin

Button: Download Hypertune · same link as email 1.

Version B · already run it

Subject: See what changed on your PC

Preview text: Run a benchmark before your next game.

Headline: See what changed

Body:

Hi there,

>

You've run your first Boost. Now open the Benchmark tab and run one before your next game, so you can see the difference on your own hardware.

>

Austin

Button: Run a benchmark

Link: a link that opens the app on the Benchmark tab (Kamil to confirm). Keep the neutral fallback until this destination exists.

Email 3 · Trial ending notice

Subject: Your trial ends on {{ trial end date }}

Preview text: Here's what happens next.

Headline: Your trial ends on {{ trial end date }}

Body:

Hi there,

>

Your free trial ends on {{ trial end date }}. Your paid plan is scheduled to start at {{ plan price }} {{ billed monthly or yearly }}.

>

Want to change plan or cancel? You can do that in your account.

>

Austin

Button: Manage my plan

Link: https://app.hypertune.gg/membership/subscription.

The date and price come from profile properties Kamil sends. Never type them in. Regional prices differ and the yearly offer changes around 30 September.

Design rules for all three

  1. Format: the founder note template for emails 1 and 2, the account notice template for email 3, as in the email plan. V2 wordmark and button colour; one image at most.
  2. Live text, not images, for the headline, body and button. The email must still read with images off.
  3. The button sits in the first screen on a phone: under the headline, before the image. It must be at least 44 pixels tall and full width on mobile.
  4. One destination per email. The image links to the same place as the button. No social icon row. The footer holds support (Discord), "Manage or cancel your trial" and unsubscribe, in small text.
  5. Under 80 words of body copy.
  6. Claims: no performance numbers in these emails. No pro player names, no follower counts.
  7. Sender: "Austin from Hypertune" (Austin, 25 Sep). The voice stays first person, from Austin.

Whether the app can be opened from a link, and on which tabEmail 2 fallback and 2B
An optimizer-run event sent to Klaviyo (for example Ran Optimizer, with the date)The email 2 split

Email 1 can go live once the installer destination is ready. Email 2 uses the neutral fallback until the run event and app destination arrive, then changes to the A/B split. Email 3 waits for the trial date, price and billing-period properties.

For Austin to decide

Email 3's button: "Manage my plan" (recommended, and the honest version), or a "switch to yearly and save" offer. The offer may earn more clicks, but it would be the only email in the flow that sells.

How we'll know it worked

MeasureBaseline, trials since 5 AugustRead after
Trials that run Hypertune in the first 24 hours40% (157 of 395)60 days (about 600 trials)
Trials that run it twice or more4% (16 of 395)60 days

At about 300 trials a month, anything under 60 days is noise. Judge it on the first two rows: they move first, and they are what the emails are for.
